How 11-year old played dead to survive Syria massacre

Posted on 12:26 by Unknown

When the gunmen began to slaughter his family, 11-year-old Ali el-Sayed says he fell to the floor of his home, soaking his clothes with his brother’s blood to fool the killers into thinking he was already dead.
The Syrian boy tried to stop himself from trembling, even as the gunmen, with long beards and shaved heads, killed his parents and all four of his siblings, one by one.
The youngest to die was Ali’s brother, 6-year-old Nader. His small body bore two bullet holes — one in his head, another in his back.
“I put my brother’s blood all over me and acted like I was dead,” Ali told The Associated Press over Skype on Wednesday, his raspy voice steady and matter-of-fact, five days after the killing spree that left him both an orphan and an only child.

Ali is one of the few survivors of a weekend massacre in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages and olive groves in Syria’s central Homs province. More than 100 people were killed, many of them women and children who were shot or stabbed in their houses.
The killings brought immediate, worldwide condemnation of President Bashar Assad, who has unleashed a violent crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011. Activists say as many as 13,000 people have been killed since the revolt began.

U.N. investigators and witnesses blame at least some of the Houla killings on shadowy gunmen known as shabiha who operate on behalf of Assad’s government.
Syrian activist Maysara Hilaoui said he was at home when the massacre in Houla began. He said there were two waves of violence, one starting at 5 p.m. Friday and a second at 4 a.m. Saturday.
“The shabiha took advantage of the withdrawal of rebel fighters,” he said. “They started entering homes and killing the young as well as the old.”
Ali, the 11-year-old, said his mother began weeping the moment about 11 gunmen entered the family home in the middle of the night after arriving in a military armored vehicle and a bus. The men led Ali’s father and oldest brother outside.
“My mother started screaming ‘Why did you take them? Why did you take them?’” Ali said.
Soon afterward, he said, the gunmen killed Ali’s entire family.
As Ali huddled with his youngest siblings, a man in civilian clothes took Ali’s mother to the bedroom and shot her five times in the head and neck.
“Then he left the bedroom. He used his flashlight to see in front of him,” Ali said. “When he saw my sister Rasha, he shot her in the head while she was in the hallway.”
Ali had been hiding near his brothers Nader, 6, and Aden, 8. The gunmen shot both of them, killing them instantly. He then fired at Ali but missed.
“I was terrified,” Ali said, speaking from Houla, where relatives have taken him in. “My whole body was trembling.”
Ali is among the few survivors of the massacre, although it was impossible to independently corroborate his story. The AP contacted him through anti-regime activists in Houla who arranged for an interview with the child over Skype.

1-Year-Old Girl Pregnant With Her Twin In Her Womb

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

Kang’s parents couldn’t understand why their daughter’s stomach was growing larger overnight and feared it could be a tumour.
Her swollen belly made her look pregnant and drew taunts from neighbours who branded her “a monster”

But after doctors examined the 18-month old they discovered that she had an extremely rare condition, which affects 1 in 500,000 births – when one twin in the womb grows larger than the other and envelops its smaller sibling. The second foetus never fully develops, but continues to grow within the first baby, feeding off it like a parasite.
It left Kang, from Henan Provence, unable to eat solid food and spending her time in constant pain. Kang had already had a difficult start to life. Just days old, she was abandoned in a field by her parents. Her cries were heard by farm worker Wang Guihua, 35, who took her home and nursed her back to health.
Wang and her husband Kang Xiqing, 43, had no children of their own and were allowed to foster Kang.
The worried couple took her to doctors who explained that Kang had an unborn twin growing inside her, and that it was crushing her organs as it grew. Her life was hanging in the balance, but her parents with a combined income of £400 a year, couldn’t afford the £1,000 operation that their daughter so desperately needed.
Help arrived in the form of the Red Cross who raised the funds for Kang through an appeal. She was rushed into surgery and after a grueling 10-hour operation, Kang is now recovering well and will be able to live a normal life. Her grateful mother thanked the Red Cross, saying: “We’re very grateful. We were so worried she would die. Before she used to cry in pain and hold her bump like a pregnant woman. Now we can hope she can have a normal life.”
Kang returned to her village in Henan provence in September and is doing well, she is running round the village with the other children and is eating solid food. Her mother said: “She doesn’t understand what has happened to her. But she is happy.“She still has her womb and ovaries, so one day she will be able to have children of her own.”

World’s Most Expensive Burger Is $666

Posted on 04:30 by Unknown

Just days after New York’s  Serendipity 3 restaurant claimed the Guinness Record for the world’s most expensive burger, with its $295 Le Burger Extravagant, another challenger appears. Presenting the Douche Burger, a $666 sinful delight.
After news of Serendipity 3′s burger being dubbed the world’s most expensive spread on the Internet, food blogs were almost immediately bombarded with emails about another calorie bomb that cost more than double the price of Le Burger Extravagant. That’s how the world discovered the Douch Burger, a product created by Franz Aliquo, owner of the 666 Burger food-truck. According to theirFacebook page, this devilish delicacy “costs $666.00 and consists of a f*cking burger filled and topped with rich people sh*t. Kobe beef patty (wrapped in gold leaf), foie gras, caviar, lobster, truffles, imported aged Gruyére cheese (melted with champagne steam) kopi luwak BBQ sauce, and Himalayan rock salt. It may not taste good, but it will make you feel rich as f*ck. Douche.” Gothamist interviewed Aliquo, and discovered the burger is also wrapped in three $100 bills. “When you are done with it you’ll have three greasy hundred dollar bills and have to decide what to do with them. That’s why it is called the Douche Burger,” the original entrepreneur said.

You might think the expensive creation of 666 Burger is an attempt to create the most delicious burger in the world, but you would be wrong. ”The point is that putting all this crap on top of a burger doesn’t make it taste any better and it is contrary to the essence of a burger,” Franz Aliquo says. ”It’s simple to pile a bunch of expensive stuff on a burger and charge a f*ckload for it … I have an unbridled disgust for these types of burgers and seething anger towards those that make them and try to sell them as something fancy and worthy of respect, when in essence, it’s just a chef/customer being a douchebag. Call a spade a spade.”

That’s a number the 1% can get behind.” This is the message $666 Burger posted on their Facebook page, and the high-class New York restaurant was quick to respond: They do not have a Guinness World Record, we have the world record,” said Joe Calderone, who handles the business’ public relations. ”They may have something, but it’s not sanctioned as the most expensive by Guinness World Records.” But that might change very soon, as Aliquo plans to contact Guinness to make matters right.

Wannabe Incredible Hulk Used Green Industrial Paint That Wouldn’t Come Off

Posted on 02:23 by Unknown

Paulo Henrique dos Santos, a pool attendant from Brazil, wanted so much to impersonate the Incredible Hulk for a local running event that he painted himself with green industrial paint. He later found out the paint won’t come off no matter how hard he scrubbed.
I always thought becoming a superhero was hard, but a young Brazilian Hulk fan proves it’s returning to human form that’s really tricky. According to Brazilian news site Globo Extra, 35-year-old Paulo Henrique dos Santos achieved celebrity status in the Villa Cruzeiro favela of Rio Janeiro, after he covered himself in green industrial paint, only to realize it won’t wash off. His intention was to dress up as the popular superhero for a running event, but since shops didn’t have the brand of paint he normally used, this “genius” decided to go with industrial paint normally used for ballistic missiles and nuclear submarines.

When it was time to remove the green paint, dos Santos noticed that no matter how hard he scrubbed, it would not wash off. He took 20 baths in two days, desperate to remove his improvised Hulk costume, but had no success. As if the embarrassed of having all his neighbors laugh at him as he walked around his neighborhood  wasn’t enough, photos of him and his mother trying to remove the paint went viral on the Internet. He was also forced to sleep in a room filled with plastic bags and feared the industrial paint could cause lead poisoning.

Lucky for Paulo, this story has a happy ending. After a whole team of family and friends scrubbed him for 24 hours, the man finally succeeded in removing the green paint. Despite everything he had to go through, the wannabe Hulk says he doesn’t regret the incident…

The face of the homeless man who ate another man's face before being shot dead by police

Posted on 12:21 by Unknown
Surveillance footage shows the two naked men after the attac
31 year old homeless man Rudy Eugene was shot dead by police on Saturday May 27th after he was seen chewing off the face of another homeless man while high on drugs. Rudy chewed off 75% of his victims face in the most horrific attack that has left the victim battling for his life in the hospital.

A man was cycling off the MacArthur Causeway on Saturday afternoon when he saw a naked man tearing pieces of flesh from another naked man's face at the side of a freeway. The cyclist, who later told reporters that it was the most gruesome, traumatic thing he'd ever seen in my life, called the police to the scene. When the police couldn't get Eugene to stop the savage attack, they shot him dead.

To see what's left of the face of the victim, then continue...but please be warned, it's extremely graphic. If you don't want to see it, do not continue...

Police described the scene of the attack as a horror movie, with blood and flesh all over the place.

'It was one of the most gruesome things I have ever seen in my life in person. You know, you see these things in the movies but when you see it in person, it's pretty traumatic' A police officer said.

The victim is currently in the hospital recovering from his injuries which are said to be some of the most horrific staff have ever encountered.

Unable to use door, Firefighters use wall to rescue obese man

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown
Firefighters had to cut through an exterior wall to rescue a man who became stuck in the bathroom of his cluttered, second-story apartment on Long Island, NY, officials told local media.

The man was very "overweight," officials said.

According to authorities quoted by Newsday, a rescue team used a series of ladders and a rope system Thursday to lower the man, identified as a 55-year-old former postal worker, to safety on a stretcher around 12:30 p.m. -- about three hours after someone called 911. His weight is unknown.

The man, who was not identified by police or firefighters, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the paper said. Officials said the man fell in his bathroom and could not get back on his feet. He was listed in stable condition.

Stacks of boxes blocked firefighters from bringing rescue equipment up to the man's apartment, prompting them to cut a way out through the wall, Brookhaven Town spokesman Jack Krieger said in an email to Newsday. The narrowness of the space in some places added to their difficulty, authorities said.

"From what I'm told stuff was stacked to the ceiling in most of the rooms" on the second floor, Krieger told the paper.

The second floor of the wood-frame home was condemned by the town after the rescue, Krieger said. Officials deemed it unfit for human occupancy because of what he called hoarding. The home's owner declined to comment.

After the rescue, a massive pile of junk and collectibles -- including stacks of newspapers and figurines of dragons and “Star Wars” characters -- lay in the yard, Newsday said.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Monster Queen meets British Queen

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
In a Photo taken during the Royal Variety Performance in December 2009, Monster Pop Queen Lady Gaga met with British Queen, Elizabeth II.

Although with a touch of eccentricity, in all honesty, this seem to be the most decent Lady Gaga outfit witnessed since the name Lady Gaga hits the spotlight. The photo has been one of the focus of attention British media selected as the Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 50 years as British Monarch.

Facebook is blocked in China, Along With Twitter, YouTube and Other Foreign Social Media

Posted on 01:00 by Unknown

Social media sites and blogs have lit up after eagle-eyed viewers spotted a surprise cameo in a Chinese TV documentary about the country's police force: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his now-wife, Priscilla Chan.

The documentary by CCTV was part of a series on Chinese police and high-tech crime-solving methods. A few seconds of footage showing Zuckerberg and Chan walking behind two police officers were shown included in a brief clip posted online by the Hebei province satellite station.

The footage shows the couple wearing the same clothes they were photographed in during a March 27 visit to Shanghai. Zuckerberg wears his custom hooded sweat shirt, this time in brown, and blue jeans, while Chan wears a printed short dress.

The clip shows Zuckerberg looking at the back of the police officers and smiling broadly as the couple walks off-screen. As they are shown, the narrator says: "There is a serious shortage in China's police manpower."

It was not immediately known whether CCTV producers had knowingly inserted Zuckerberg into the documentary. Facebook is blocked in China, along with Twitter, YouTube and other foreign social media, a reflection of the leadership's fear that its power could be threatened by allowing citizens to organize outside of Communist Party control and enjoy unfettered access to information.

Zuckerberg has visited China to vacation and to meet with high-tech entrepreneurs, including a 2010 lunch with Robin Li, CEO of leading Chinese search engine Baidu. He married the 27-year-old Chan on May 20 in a private ceremony at their home, during the same week that he turned 28 and stock for the social network site began trading publicly.

A spokesman for Facebook, based in California, declined to comment Monday on the video clip

Introducing - The Finger Wrestling Championship

Posted on 13:53 by Unknown

Finger wrestling, or “fingerhakeln”, used to be the way the men of Bavaria settled disputes back in the 17th century, but now it’s just an obscure sport that draws hundreds of strong men to the German region, for the annual Finger Wrestling Championship.

Now, I knew about thumb wrestling and toe wrestling, but I was totally oblivious to finger wrestling. That’s probably because it never caught on outside Bavaria, but the men there take it so seriously they even have a championship to determine which one has the strongest middle finger. The 35th edition of the annual Finger Wrestling Championship was held in Schnaitsee, Chiemgau, right in the heart of Bavaria, and brought together 156 competitors ready to snap their fingers for the title of champion.

The rules of finger wrestling are pretty simple. Two contestants, usually men, sit on opposite sides of a wooden table and thread one of their fingers into a strap. Once in position, they wait for the referee’s signal to pull with all their strength, hoping to pull the other person across the table and win the match. They can only use one of their fingers and most prefer the middle one, because of its size and strength. Although it seems like a silly game, contestants train hard to prepare their fingers for the annual event. Some prefer to squeeze tennis balls, while other choose to sustain their whole body weight with one finger, or do a crazy number of single-finger press-ups.

Man proposes to girlfriend at finish line of marathon

Posted on 01:05 by Unknown

A woman who ran half of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon with her boyfriend said she was shocked when he dropped to a knee across the finish line and proposed.

Allison Ramsey, 30, said she was feeling good about her accomplishment Sunday as she crossed the finish line and her emotions quickly took an upswing when Nolan James Jr., 25, asked her to be his wife, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Monday.

Ramsey accepted.

"I was completely shocked," she said. "I had no idea. I was so excited to have finished the [half-marathon] race in under 2 hours. I was emotional about that. And then this."

James said he planned the proposal weeks in advance and even alerted Ramsey's family.

"I wanted to do something today that we would remember the rest of our lives," he said. "Running brought us together."

James said he was most nervous about having to tote around the engagement ring for 13.1 miles.

"It was so nerve-wracking," he said. "I can't tell you how many times I touched my pocket to make sure it was still there."

Cows Crash Party, Drinks All The Beer: Video

Posted on 00:37 by Unknown

Police in Massachusetts attempting to deal with a herd of loose cows said the beer-loving bovines crashed a backyard party and cleared it of brews.

Boxford Police Lt. James Riter said he was directing traffic around the herd on Main Street when the cows took off for the back yard of a nearby home, The Boston Globe reported Friday.

"I could hear screaming coming from the back of the house. When I ran around back, a group of young adults were outside enjoying the nice weather and having a few beers," Riter said. "The cows chased them away from the table they were sitting at and started drinking their beers. They knocked the beer cans over with their noses started drinking beer right off the table."

Riter said that of the available beers, the cows seemed to prefer the Bud Light to the Miller Light.

"When they ran out of beers on the table, one of them started to forage in the recycling to see if he could find any last drops in there," Riter said.

Riter said a dispatcher was able to contact the owner of the animals, who was able to round up the herd with the help of some friends.

"Myself and another officer blocked traffic; we had one cruiser in front of the cows, and I followed behind them," Riter said. "We marched them about three-quarters of a mile up Main Street where they belonged."

How Chinese Billionaire Pays $800,000 to Find ‘Pure Wife’

Posted on 13:52 by Unknown

They say you can’t put a price on love, but a mysterious Chinese millionaire is trying to prove everyone wrong by spending a matchmaking service 5 million yuan( $788,000) to find him a suitable wife.
On May 20th, the Garden Hotel, in China’s Guangzhou City, hosted a special event entitled “Multi-Millionaire Seeking Spouses in Ten Cities Show”. The ‘show’ was basically a competition between 320 female candidates battling for the heart of a mystery billionaire looking to settle down. According to China Smack, the anonymous businessman contacted a local matchmaking service and offered them 5 million yuan to look for the women of his dreams, in 10 cities nationwide. Just like other important bachelors we’ve featured on OC, he’s probably too busy to look for love himself.

Sounds like easy money for the matchmaking business, but the billionaire also has a few standards his would-be wife has to meet: she must be between 20 – 26 years old, weigh around 50 kg, be no shorter than 162cm and no taller that 170cm,  she must have above junior college education, be good-looking, have a nice figure, and most importantly, she must have a pure body (be a virgin). In order to get the girls attention, the guy revealed a little something about himself: he’s under 50 years of age, is a well-known Chinese entrepreneur, enjoys golf, has a strong healthy body. Come on, how could a girl resist that?

The 320 women who participated in the Multi-Millionaire Seeking Spouses in Ten Cities Show were chosen from 2,800 applicants who hoped they could melt the heart of the anonymous billionaire. The girls were thoroughly screened by employees of the matchmaking firm, to make sure they fit the requirements of their employer. To improve their chances of finding the perfect candidates, matchmakers decided to outsource some of the work, by setting up a “Talent Scout Award”. Anyone who knows a girl who might have a chance to impress the entrepreneur should recommend her to the dating service, and if the girl is invited on a first date, they get a 50,000 yuan ($7,882) commission. Should she become the lucky wife of the billionaire, the person who recommended her will get a 3 million yuan ($473,000) residential apartment as prize.

Asked about the ‘pure body’ requirement, most of the candidates said they didn’t have a problem with it, but there was one who expressed her concerns, should an examination be required as well. Another girl didn’t seem too worried about that, saying anyone could pass that with the help of reconstructive surgery. I don’t know how you guys feel about this, but the fact of paying for a ‘pure wife’ seems totally wrong to me… One has to ask the question, if these girls came for the money, can they still be pure?

This kind of matchmaking events for the rich have been rather popular in recent years, and a school for gold diggers has opened in Beijing for the sole purpose of teaching women how to land wealthy, powerful men…

21st-Century Cavemen – 30 Million Chinese Live in Caves

Posted on 02:11 by Unknown

This title might seem a bit shocking, but considering China’s total population, 30 million really isn’t very much. Still, millions of people living in caves in this modern era is kind of strange, wouldn’t you say?
According to a report by The Los Angeles Times, millions of Chinese people have gone underground, to live in caves. So I guess calling someone a caveman in China really shouldn’t be taken as an insult, especially if you consider many of these burrowed dwellings have all the facilities of modern homes. Because they take advantage of the existing landscape, China’s cave houses don’t require too many other building materials, and since the hills and mountains they are dug into act as natural insulation all year round, they are more energy efficient than most conventional family homes.

But don’t imagine you can see this kind of cave dwellings all around China. Most of them are found in the Shanxi province, where the porous yellow soil is relatively easy to dig into. Called “yaodong” these inhabited caves have semicircular entrances covered with rice paper or hanging rugs which act as makeshift doors. Most of them aren’t very fancy, but modern amenities like plumbing, electricity and phone service can be set up if the inhabitants have enough money to spend. The majority of China’s cave dwellers can do without all these expensive features, though, and prefer to enjoy their homes’ natural bonuses – high ceilings and lots of space with a nice yard out front where you can exercise and sit in the sun.

A 2007 report showed most of China’s cave houses were inhabited by the elderly, while the young population migrated toward the big city and moved into concrete homes, but there are some young people who dream of going back to their childhood caves, at some point. “When I get old, I’d like to go back to my roots,” says Ren Shouhua, who grew up in a cave, but moved to the city in his 20s.  As for the older cave dwellers, they wouldn’t dream of abandoning their ancestral homes for the comfort of modern residences. “Life is easy and comfortable here. I’ve lived all my life in caves, and I can’t imagine anything different,” says 76-year-old Ma Liangshui, who lives in a one-room cave with a bed, a fire pit for cooking, and electricity to power a single light bulb.

Believe it or not, China’s cave homes are actually in high demand. A lot of people come here looking to rent our caves, but nobody wants to move out,” says one owner. The ones that are for sale cost around $46,000, and for people who just want to experience life as a modern caveman, burrowed dwellings are rented for about $30 a month. It’s no Ritz-Carlton, but you definitely won’t forget the experience.

Mother Banned From Facebook After Posting Photos Of Terminally Ill Son

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
A mother has been banned from Facebook after posting images of her newborn son, reports KCTV 5 News. Parents Heather and Patrick Walker of Memphis, Tennessee welcomed their son Grayson James Walker on February 15, 2012, notes the Daily Mail.

The infant lived only eight hours after suffering from anencephaly, a rare birth defect where a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull. To share his memory with family and friends, Walker took to Facebook posting the photographs of her deceased son. Shortly after, the social network deleted the images. When the Walkers encouraged family and friends to contact Facebook in protest, the social network banned the mother from the site entirely, notes the Daily Mail.

Gizmodo explains Facebook's community standards prohibit nine types of content from the site, including the following: Violence and Threats, Self-Harm, Bullying and Harassment, Hate Speech, Graphic Violence, Nudity and Pornography, Identity and Privacy, Intellectual Property and Phishing and Spam.

UPDATE: 5:00 p.m
In a prepared statement from Facebook the company commented on the incident.
“Upon investigation, we concluded the photo does not violate our guidelines and was removed in error. Facebook is a place where almost a billion people share more than 300 million photos a day. Our dedicated User Operations Team reviews millions of pieces of this content a day to help keep Facebook safe for all ages. Our policies are enforced by a team of reviewers in several offices across the globe. This team looks at hundreds of thousands of reports every week, and as you might expect, occasionally, we make a mistake and remove a piece of content we shouldn’t have. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience."

Facebook also explained Heather Walker has never been suspended from the site. Instead, the company said it temporarily blocked her ability to upload photos as a consequence of having a photo removed from the site. This happens automatically whenever a user is cautioned for inappropriate content.

Mother Creates Unique Facebook Punishment After Daughter Posts Alcohol-Related Photos

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown
After author ReShonda Tate Billingsley found her daughter posting alcohol-related photos to the social network, she came up with a very original, and no doubt effective, form of punishment.

Following up the post her mother deemed inappropriate is a new photo that features the young girl holding a hand-written sign that reads, "Since I want to post photos of me holding liquor I am obviously not ready for social media and will be taking a hiatus until I learn what I should + should not post. BYE-BYE."

Rough.
But Billingsley isn't alone in her parenting style.
Denise Abbott, a mother from Ohio, used the same method to punish her 13-year-old daughter Ava after she found her posting "disrespectful things" on Facebook.
"I do not know how to keep my [mouth shut]. I am no longer allowed on Facebook or my phone. Please ask why," the text on the 13-year-old girl's Facebook photo read.
Despite the embarrassment, Abbot told NBC she doesn't regret her disciplinary action, saying she needed to find something that would "totally impact her."
"You have to adapt your parenting skills with the timmes"

Abbott told NBC. It could be worse, though. At least Billingsley and Abbot didn't put a bullet through their child's laptop and post the video on Facebook.

How A 73-year-old Japanese Woman, Scales Mount Everest

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
A 73-year-old Japanese woman climbed to Mount Everest's peak Saturday, smashing her own record to again become the oldest woman to scale the world's highest mountain.

Tamae Watanabe reached Everest's 8,850-meter-high (29,035-foot-high) summit from the northern side of the mountain in Tibet on Saturday morning with four other team members, said Ang Tshering of the China Tibet Mountaineering Association in Nepal.

Watanabe had climbed Everest in 2002 at the age of 63 to become the oldest woman to scale the mountain. She had retained the title until she topped herself a decade later.
Tshering said Watanabe and the other team members are in good condition and are on their way back to the base of the mountain.

Watanabe and her team left the last high altitude camp located at 8,300 meters (27,225 feet) Friday night and climbed all night before reaching the summit Saturday morning.
Weather conditions have improved on the mountains this week.

Teams have begun reaching the summit even from the Nepalese side in the southern of the mountain, according to Nepal's mountaineering department.

The first teams from the Nepalese side reached the summit on Friday, and many more reached the summit on Saturday morning.

Weather conditions on the mountain have been challenging this year, prompting several expeditions to cancel their plans to try to reach the summit.
May is considered the best month to climb Everest, when climbers get about two windows of good weather for their bid for the summit.

The oldest person to climb Everest is a Nepalese man, Min Bahadur Sherchan, who climbed Everest in 2008 at the age of 76.

State Of The Ocean: 'Shocking' Report Warns Of Mass Extinction From Current Rate Of Marine Distress

Posted on 01:03 by Unknown
If the current actions contributing to a multifaceted degradation of the world's oceans aren't curbed, a mass extinction unlike anything human history has ever seen is coming, an expert panel of scientists warns in an alarming new report.
The preliminary report from the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) is the result of the first-ever interdisciplinary international workshop examining the combined impact of all of the stressors currently affecting the oceans, including pollution, warming, acidification, overfishing and hypoxia.

“The findings are shocking," Dr. Alex Rogers, IPSO's scientific director, said in a statement released by the group. "This is a very serious situation demanding unequivocal action at every level. We are looking at consequences for humankind that will impact in our lifetime, and worse, our children's and generations beyond that."

The scientific panel concluded that degeneration in the oceans is happening much faster than has been predicted, and that the combination of factors currently distressing the marine environment is contributing to the precise conditions that have been associated with all major extinctions in the Earth's history.
According to the report, three major factors have been present in the handful of mass extinctions that have occurred in the past: an increase of both hypoxia (low oxygen) and anoxia (lack of oxygen that creates "dead zones") in the oceans, warming and acidification. The panel warns that the combination of these factors will inevitably cause a mass marine extinction if swift action isn't taken to improve conditions.
The report is the latest of several published in recent months examining the dire conditions of the oceans. A recent World Resources Institute report suggests that all coral reefs could be gone by 2050 if no action is taken to protect them, while a study published earlier this year in BioScience declares oysters as "functionally extinct", their populations decimated by over-harvesting and disease. Just last week scientists forecasted that this year's Gulf "dead zone" will be the largest in history due to increased runoff from the Mississippi River dragging in high levels of nitrates and phosphates from fertilizers.
A recent study in the journal Nature, meanwhile, suggests that not only will the next mass extinction be man-made, but that it could already be underway. Unless humans make significant changes to their behavior, that is.
The IPSO report calls for such changes, recommending actions in key areas: immediate reduction of CO2 emissions, coordinated efforts to restore marine ecosystems, and universal implementation of the precautionary principle so "activities proceed only if they are shown not to harm the ocean singly or in combination with other activities." The panel also calls for the UN to swiftly introduce an "effective governance of the High Seas."
"The challenges for the future of the ocean are vast, but unlike previous generations we know what now needs to happen," Dan Laffoley of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and co-author of the report said in a press release for the new report. "The time to protect the blue heart of our planet is now, today and urgent."

Arnold Schwarzenegger Dog?

Posted on 05:02 by Unknown

Take a look at the dog below. What do you think ? Pretty sure that you don't believe what your eyes are seeing, you might think that this picture is photoshoped, but everything is real.

The type of dog pictured here is a “bully whippet,” a type of whippet with a genetic mutation that makes it more muscular and faster than standard ones.

Wendy, the bully whippet in this photograph, lives in Victoria, British Columbia, and is remarkable in that she has two mutated copies of the gene and is therefore a “double-muscled” bully whippet who weighs twice as much as a standard one. The increased muscle mass, along with metabolism and extremely low levels of body fats, can translate to impressive super-feats, including marked increases in speed, agility and power.

The Ancient Sport of Camel Jumping in the Deserts of Yemen

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown

The men of the Zaraniq tribe, on the west coast of Yemen, have a truly unique tradition – they jump over a row of camels just like modern daredevils jump over cars.

Famous throughout Yemen for their speed, strength and courage, the members of the Zaraniq tribe are the world’s only professional camel jumpers. Taking running starts, jumpers try to sail over as many camels as possible, before tumbling to the ground. During camel jumping events, the one who leaps over the highest number of camels is considered the winner. “This is what we do,” says Bhayder Mohammed Yusef Qubaisi, one of the champions of the the Tihama-al-Yemen, a desert plain, on the coast of the Red Sea.

The origins of camel jumping can be traced back to ancient times, but the tradition was almost completely forgotten, until recently, when Zaraniq members began practicing it once again. Camel-jumping events take place during local celebrations like weddings, and at the al-Khamis, an annual festival that marks the end of the palm season, and are always accompanied by singing and dancing. The traditional blue clothes, which identify them throughout Yemen, are rolled up around the waist before a jump.

The tradition of camel jumping has been recently documented by photographers Adam Reynolds, from Bloomington, Indiana, and Canadian Ed Ou. Unfortunately, both reported Yemen remains a very poor country, a place frozen in time in the midst of the amazing change going on in the Arab world. The Tehama region, where the Zaraniq people live, is one of the poorest regions in the poorest country of the Arab world…

Animal lover moves pet horse into her living room after arguments with neighbours

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

AN ECCENTRIC equestrian has moved her horse into the living room of her semi-detached home after a quarrel with neighbours.
Stephanie Noble shares her home with three-year-old filly Grey Lady Too after a series of disputes with locals near Stornoway on Lewis.
But the horse and all its paraphernalia take up most of the space, leaving only one habitable room for 65-year-old Stephanie.
Yesterday, she said: “It will look strange to most people but I really had no choice.

“I’m living in one small bedroom upstairs. Another bedroom is full of horse equipment, another is full of horse meal and the living room is full of horse. Even the bath is full of horse mats.”
She added: “I’ve heard that some call me a mad old woman but I don’t give a stuff. I know that all I’m doing is defending a principle.
“We didn’t win two wars by just sitting back and letting the Germans come steaming in. I won’t be shoved around.
“The council has told me that there is no problem with me having the pony living with me but it is not ideal.”
Stephanie moved to the Hebridean island nine years ago. She had previously ran equestrian businesses in Ireland, Europe and the US.

In September last year, she decided to follow her dream and buy a Connemara pony, similar to the first one she was given as a 13-year-old schoolgirl.
She said: “I spent £1850 on her and I think it was money well spent as she is beautiful. My first ever Connemara pony was Grey Lady back in 1959. I decided to call her Grey Lady Too.”
Stephanie claims the first stables and grazing arranged for the pony fell through after she was let down.
She then tried to house Grey Lady Too in an unused outbuilding on communal land close to her home.
But one of her neighbours then said the building belonged to him. Police were called and Stephanie was arrested and spent a night in the cells.

The SSPCA tried to persuade her to allow the pony to be rehomed.
She arranged alternative lodgings but her relationship with the stable owner broke down in a row over money. They brought the pony back to Stephanie’s home on Christmas Eve and tethered the animal to her wooden porch.
Stephanie said: “I was faced with the choice of leaving her out in the cold or bringing her indoors and I chose to bring her in.”
Over the past few weeks, she has used furniture to create walls within her front room and built a stable door.
Stephanie has also spent hundreds of pounds on rubber mats to place hay and straw for bedding and bought 60 litres of cat litter to deal with the pony’s bodily functions.

But she hopes eventually to build a stable next to her home but needs at least £1000 to get it up and running.
Last night, one neighbour said it was the local people who were victims, not Stephanie. He said: “Who in their right mind would ever want their next door neighbour to be a horse?
“The problem is not unsympathetic neighbours. She has been a pain in the neck from the minute she got here.”
He added: “The pony seems quite nice – but she’s not.”
A spokesman for Western Isles Council said Stephanie was free to do as she pleased on her own property as long as no issues of public safety or hygiene arose. He added: “We don’t encourage people to keep horses in their homes.”
