Japan To Launch 'fasting' Camps For Internet-addicted Students

Posted on 22:10 by Unknown
Youngsters in Japan who are glued to their smartphones and laptops may be sent to an Internet "fasting" camp to help them disconnect from the online world.

The Ministry of Education estimates that some 518,000 Japanese children between the ages of 12 and 18 are addicted to the Internet, according to The Daily Telegraph. And officials fear that the number of middle school and high school students in need of a digital detox is rising.

--> To combat this growing problem, the ministry has asked the government to fund immersion programs, or "fasting" camps, designed to separate the children from their computers, handheld gaming devices and mobile phones.

"We want to get them out of the virtual world and to encourage them to have real communication with other children and adults," Akifumi Sekine, a ministry spokesperson, told The Telegraph.

The camps would be held outdoors and at public facilities where the kids would have no way to access the Internet. Instead, they would be encouraged to participate in games, team sports and other activities. Psychiatrists and clinical psychotherapists would be on standby in case the youngsters struggle with the transition back to reality.

The Ministry also plans to launch a comprehensive research project on Internet addiction in the next fiscal year.

An excess of "screen time" has been linked to sleep disorders, depression and obesity, according to the

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, online addiction can cause sleep and eating disorders as well as deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot in the lower leg or thigh that sometimes associated with traveling on long-haul flights.

Excess “screen time” may also increase a child’s risk of depression, attention problems and obesity, as well as interfere with their school work.

11-year-old Boy Admitted To The University To Study Quantum Physics

Posted on 21:51 by Unknown
Carson Huey-You, an 11-year-old is among the new class of undergrads at Texas Christian University – adjusting to college life, finding the right buildings, settling in for those easy core classes.

Around the time when most kids are playing with jacks and baseball cards, young Huey-You will be taking university-level courses among teenagers and young adults. And it won't just be any class load.
--> The boy, who scored a 1770 on his SAT, speaks Mandarin Chinese and plays the piano, will be studying nothing less than quantum physics.

His mom, Claretta, says her son had intense focus as an infant. By the age of one, he could read. By five, he was doing pre-algebra. Calculus, he says, relaxes him.

If he graduates as his parents expect, in four to five years, Carson will have a college diploma before or at the same time he gets his driver’s license.

Man Addicted To Stealing Cuts Off His Own Hands In Line With Sharia Law

Posted on 12:40 by Unknown
A habitual thief who was left so ashamed by his uncontrollable urge to steal, took the drastic step of cutting off his own hands.

Huffington post reports Ali Afifi is believed to have been motivated by Sharia law when he amputated both hands in separate incidents.

The Egyptian lost his first hand by holding it under the wheels of a train five years ago.

His shocked father had him institutionalised, but the 28-year-old repeated the action with the other hand upon his release.

-->Afifi, who posed for these pictures this week, is said to have asked a Muslim scholar to sever his hands becausehe could not stop stealing “after losing the war against the devil.
Afifi said:

But the Sheikh refused my request, saying he is not a ruler or in a decision-making position to take such a decision… he advised me to repent and seek God’s help... I then decided to cut my hands off.”

Describing his addiction as a "disease", Afifi began stealing lunches from friends as a child, before moving onto items in shops, mobile phones and gold jewellry.

Weird Occupation: German Man's Business Specializes In Creating, Maintaining Lies

Posted on 05:31 by Unknown
The owner of a German lying business said his services range from sending mendacious text messages to helping unfaithful spouses live double lives.

Patrick Ulmer, 28, said his lying business, sometimes referred to as an alibi agency, helps people create lies to conceal the truth from friends, family and employers, Der Spiegel reported Friday.

Ulmer said one of his more large-scale client pays a yearly fee for the agency to maintain a fake apartment in Cologne, Germany, where the man claims to work for part of the year, to conceal his double life from his two wives, who
live in different cities in Switzerland. Ulmer said he sometimes visits the apartment as a work colleague when one of the women comes to visit him in the false residence.

Ulmer said some of his more basic services include sending phony text messages, booking phony vacations and maintaining false addresses with mail service.

Ulmer said demand for his business has spiked sharply since a recent episode of popular German crime drama "Tatort" featured a fictional company offering similar services on a larger scale.

He said his business is not as large as the fictional one, but he hopes to reach that point someday and he recently expanded to start a branch in Austria.

Thai Village Khlong Charoen Wai Sieged By Monkeys

Posted on 05:15 by Unknown
In a Thai village, homes are raided, property is pinched and locals are attacked by dastardly gangs operating beyond the law -- but the perpetrators are not men, but monkeys.

"They creep into my house when they see me sleeping, they go into the kitchen and take cooking oil, sugar and even the medicines that I hide in a cabinet," said Chaluay Khamkajit, after years battling with pesky primates who are thought to have been drawn into Khlong Charoen Wai village
by habitat loss.

"They took my snacks, I can buy new ones, but the medicines are important to me," the 72-year-old said, as she and her husband demonstrated a variety of anti-monkey devices including a homemade lock for the fridge and the more direct deterrent of a sling-shot.

Around 150 households in the shrimp farming community in Chachoengsao province on the east coast, 80 kilometres (50 miles) from Bangkok, have suffered raids by so-called "sea monkeys" -- long-tailed macaques -- for about a decade.

An increasing number of shrimp farms, coupled with the associated deforestation, is thought to be behind a surge in monkeys venturing into built-up areas.

--> "They could find food easily in the past but when there is less forest, they have to find food in people's houses," said village headman Chatree Kaencharoen, expressing frustration at some villagers who give food to the incorrigible creatures.

"Sometimes, a few hundred monkeys come at once -- especially at dawn and dusk when it is cooler. They know it is time to be fed," he said.
Conservation group WWF said people have encroached on the monkeys' habitat -- not the other way around.
"People have moved closer to nature, that is why there is an increased chance of interaction between human and animals," WWF Thailand director Petch Manopawitr told AFP.

"Macaques can adjust their behaviour quite well -- they learn in similar ways as humans -- and when they know that they can find food in a village, they come."

The spread of villages into formerly dense jungle has caused other clashes between people and beasts in Thailand.
"Wild pigs eat farm plants. But the villagers can also shoot the pigs and eat them," said Petch, adding that elephants and tigers were a less edible source of village disruption.
And the WWF says the problem is accelerating.
In a recent report, the conservation group said demand for farmland could strip the Greater Mekong region -- Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam -- of a third of its remaining forest cover over the next two decades without swift government action.

Between 1973 -- the first point of available data -- and 2009, Thailand lost some 43 percent of its natural woodland, the WWF said, although it praised the country for its network of national parks.
Khlong Charoen Wai's monkeys spend their days hanging out on the narrow bamboo bridges that meander across the coastal swampland at the edge of the village.

Mothers lounge with babies slung across their chests, while others leap between nearby mangrove trees.
They tend to flee when approached. But when nobody seems to be looking, they climb onto roofs, leaving trails of muddy footprints as they stalk into homes through any openings they can find.
Residents have been forced to seal their houses with nets, lock their windows despite the tropical heat, and secure their property the best they can.

"They pushed over a 21-inch television, which fell and smashed. They even stole a rice cooker, managed to open it and scooped out the rice to eat," said Chatree.

Local authorities tried to curb the monkey raids -- even attempting to sterilise the intruders. But that effort was on too small a scale according to deputy village head Tawin Songcharoen.
"We cannot stop them," he told AFP.

Loving Husband Buys His Wife 55,000 Dresses in 56 Years

Posted on 05:00 by Unknown
If love was measured in dresses, Paul Brockman would probably be the most loving husband in the world. Over the past 56 years, the German-born contractor from Lomita, California, has gifted his wife Margot with 55,000 dresses, all of which he picked out himself.

The first 10 dresses in Paul Brockman’s impressive collection were free. He got them while working at a seaport in Bremen, Germany, where workers could pick out anything they wanted when the merchandise bales were opened. He gave them all to his then-girlfriend, Margot. After going steady for a while, Paul asked the girl’s parents for her hand in marriage, and they agreed, on one condition – that they leave struggling Germany and move to America. They left for the Land of Opportunity during the 50′s and Paul was disowned by his own family for going against their wishes. The two arrived in Ohio and moved to Arizona before finally settling in California.

Brockman started working in construction. No stranger to hard labor, he was soon able to build a construction company and pretty soon the money started coming in. He and Margot shared a
passion for dance and went ballroom dancing every week, but Paul wanted her to have a different dress every time, so he kept buying her new ones. By the time they arrived in Los Angeles, in 1988, Margot Brockman already had between 25,000 and 26,000 dresses.

--> Margot never liked shopping, and says she would rather clean the entire house than go out looking through the crappy, mass-produced items available in today’s stores. So Paul picked out and bought the dresses all by himself. He would buy dresses before work, after work and even during work, sometimes coming home with up to 30 different ones. He got them during end-of-season department store sales, at yard sales and pretty much anywhere he saw something he liked. At one point, his obsession with dresses got so out of hand that he stopped caring about their size. He would look at a garment, visualize Margot wearing it and get it without actually knowing if it would fit her. ”You know, it’s a crazy idea, but I kept thinking maybe my wife grows into them,” Brockman told LA Weekly.  ”Whether losing weight or gaining.” He never set a budget for his purchases. He would sometimes spend all the money he had in his pocket, and wait until next week if he was broke. The most he spent was $300, on a dress Margot never even wore. As you can imagine, most of the 55,000 dresses were never worn.

His wife asked him to quit, telling him she didn’t need all those dresses, but Paul wouldn’t hear about it. Eventually, he started hiding the new dresses from her, although she noticed their garage was getting fuller every day. Soon, they ran out of room, and Paul rented six shipping containers, where he stored the dresses in secret. He didn’t want people knowing he was buying and collecting dresses, and whenever anyone noticed Margot was wearing a different outfit every time, he would lie and tell them that she sewed the dresses herself. ”Most men, they don’t care what their wife puts on,” he says. “I’m different. I like my wife to look good at any time.”

Things went on this way for a long time, until last year, when the Brockman’s daughter, Louise, found Paul’s stash of dresses in the garage. He and Margot had never told anyone about his bizarre shopping habit, not their neighbors and friends, not even their kids. When Louise asked what he planned to do with all 55,000 dresses, Paul said “I’m gonna leave them to you”. But she had inherited Margot’s sense of practicality and his bullheadedness and had no plans of inheriting tens of thousands of old dresses. She proposed selling them instead, and asked to see the whole collection to make sure they were still in good condition. ”When I saw the way he packed them,” Louise says, “it looks like somebody’s closet in there.” He had built closet rods inside the shipping containers and layered the floor with more bags of dresses.

After meeting with fashion experts and designers, Louise spent a whole month going through her father’s collection and arranging the dresses by color in a large warehouse. Paul built dressing rooms and started inviting people to shop for dresses. He has three sales a month now, and although they’ve managed to sell part of the collection, the place looks as packed as ever, and they’re struggling to keep up with the $2,200 lease cost of the warehouse. Brockman hopes to sell them all en masse, perhaps to a fellow connoisseur, but such a client hasn’t turned up yet.

Louise estimates the 55,000 dresses her father bought in the last half century represent a $1.5 million investment, but he just can’t afford to do it anymore. Paul was a successful contractor back in the day, but at 78, he’s long past retirement. He hasn’t bought a new dress in two months, the longest he’s gone in 56 years, but he must constantly remind himself to think financially to let his obsession go. Still, he says he regrets nothing.

If you’re looking for a vintage ballroom dress, check out the 55,000 dresses website. You’re bound to find something you like, and the Brockmans need the business.

'Walking' Shark Discovered In Indonesia

Posted on 04:21 by Unknown
A new species of shark that "walks" along the seabed using its fins as tiny legs has been discovered in eastern Indonesia, an environmental group said Friday.
The brown and white bamboo shark pushes itself along the ocean floor as it forages for small fish and crustaceans at night, said Conservation International, whose scientists were involved in its discovery.
The shark, which grows to a maximum length of just 80 centimetres (30 inches) and is harmless to humans, was discovered off Halmahera, one of the Maluku Islands that lie west of New Guinea.

Bamboo sharks, also known as longtail carpet sharks, are relatively small compared to their larger cousins, with the largest adult reaching only about 120 centimetres (47 inches) in length.
They have unusually long tails that are bigger than the rest of their bodies and are found in tropical waters around Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea.
-->
Conservation International said the discovery of the shark, which was first disclosed in the International Journal of Ichthyology, "should help draw diver interest to this mega-diverse but largely undiscovered region".
Ketut Sarjana Putra, Indonesia country director for the group, said the Hemiscyllium halmahera shark could "serve as an excellent ambassador to call public attention to the fact that most sharks are harmless to humans and are worthy of our conservation attention".
Conservation International, whose scientists discovered the shark along with colleagues from the Western Australian Museum, added it came at a time when Indonesia was increasing its efforts to protect shark and ray species.

Plane Lands Upside Down In Water

Posted on 04:10 by Unknown
A small plane crashed onto a beach in Rancho Palos Verdes in Southern California Friday.
--> The plane landed upside down in shallow water, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said in a statement. The pilot was the sole occupant and suffered minor injuries but is alert and talking.
The pilot was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, LASD Leiutenant
Vicki Stuckey said to The Huffington Post.
The plane is a Piper PA-18 "Super Cub" N224T and was towing an advertising banner before it crashed, Allen Kenitzer, spokesman for the FAA, said to HuffPost. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating the accident, with the NTSD taking the lead, he said.
"The NTSB investigator usually posts a basic preliminary report on the agency’s website, within a week or two of an accident," Kenitzer said. "However, it typically takes NTSB months to come up with a probable cause for accidents." He said the NTSB and the owner's insurance company will handle moving the crashed plane.
The emergency call came in at 11:42 a.m. Friday.

Ania Lisewska, Polish Woman, Wants To Have Sex With 100,000 Men

Posted on 02:56 by Unknown
It's good to have a goal in life, but the one purportedly expressed by a woman in Warsaw, Poland, may be a stretch.
Ania Lisewska, 21, is allegedly attempting to travel to every city in the world so she can have sex with at least 100,000 men for 20 minutes each.
"I want men from Poland, Europe and all around the world. I love sex, fun and men," she said,
according to the Austrian Times. "In Poland the subject of sex is still taboo and anyone who wants to fulfill their sexual fantasies is considered a deviant, a whore or mentally ill."
The supposed sex marathon allegedly began last month in Warsaw, according to her Facebook page, and she hopes to have her way across Poland before moving to other countries.
So far, she's had sex with 284 men, according to Fakt.pl and didn't let the fact she has a serious boyfriend stop her.
He told the Polish language website he was "not thrilled" with her unusual hobby, but had no choice and "had to come to terms" with it.
Her Facebook page currently only has slightly more than 9,000 likes, but Lisewska is allegedly attempting to attract potential partners by setting up a website where they can register and kept apprised of her current activities.
The story raises eyebrows for a number of reasons. First, Lisewska's website isn't working properly except for the front page.
In addition, she has not responded to media requests.
Then there is the nature of the quest itself. Having sex with 100,000 people for 20 minutes each would take a person more than 3.8 years -- and that's only if they went at it day and night without breaks for sleep, food or personal hygiene.
Lisewska claims she is planning her sexual encounters to take place on weekends, which would stretch out the time frame considerably -- up to nearly 20 years, according to one Polish website.
--> Another reason to be skeptical: Many of the media stories about Lisewska suggest she is attempting to get her erotic efforts recognized by Guinness World Records. The organization has never adjudicated sexually-oriented records.
Lisewska is now claiming to be the victim of foul play on her Facebook page. She claims it was hacked by someone who posted she had AIDS, which she denied by posting test results on the page.
But even if Lisewska is on the level and her motives are pure as the driven snow, the stories of guys who've been ripped off by "women" claiming to offer free sex or love are legion. Ask Manti T'eo, the football player who didn't realize his Internet girlfriend was actually a male friend.
Sometimes, they're not even women, like Nazario Cruz and Jose Urias, who were arrested earlier this month for allegedly pretending to be a young woman whose fantasy was to have sex while rolling around in cold hard cash. The deceptive duo allegedly arranged to meet the guys and would then rob them.

Teen Kills Childhood Friend Over Play Station 3, Shoots Victim 9 Times In The Head

Posted on 02:33 by Unknown
Police say they have made an arrest in the murder of a man whose body was found at a demolition site in Philadelphia, adding that a scheme to steal and sell a video game console played a role in the killing. Anderson was described by police as a ‘childhood friend’ of the victim, 19-year-old Daquan Crump.
Malik Anderson, 19, was arrested at his home in the 1800 block of Tomlinson Road on Wednesday morning without incident and charged with first-
degree murder.
Crump’s body was found on the morning of August 19th by a worker in the 10000 block of Northeast Avenue in the Somerton section of the city.
Investigators said Crump had been shot 10 times – once in the back of the head and nine times in the face.
Anderson allegedly told police that he and Crump were friends, and together they conspired to steal another friend’s PlayStation 3 video game console.
However, Anderson allegedly told police, Crump stole the console on his own and sold them without giving Anderson a cut of the money.
--> Police say Crump and the suspect hung out together the night before the murder.
Then, in the early morning hours of Monday the 19th, police say Anderson lured Crump to the demolition site.
Captain James Clark of the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit said Anderson then shot Crump once in the head, then “stood over top of his longtime friend and fired nine more times, shooting him in his head and killing him.”
Crump had just started working at a fast food restaurant about two weeks before he was killed.
Police say his family got him the job because he and his friends had just been hanging out all summer playing video games and watching television.
“This is very and very, very tragic,” Clark added. “I have two teenage sons at home and I tell them all the time, ‘be very, very careful of who you call friends and be very careful of who you hang out with.”
Police say the murder weapon, a .22 caliber gun, was recovered in the refrigerator at the home where Anderson was arrested.

Plastic Surgeon Uses His Skills to “Sculpt” the Perfect Wife

Posted on 04:46 by Unknown
Ever since they first met in 2007, Dr. David Matlock, a famous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, has been using his body-sculpting skills to turn his wife Veronica into the perfect wife.

When Veronica first visited Dr. Matlock to ask about a vaginoplasty procedure after giving birth to her daughter, she had no idea she would soon become his wife. But he did. The beautiful brunette was 40lbs heavier and was so unhappy with the way she looked that she couldn’t even look him in the eye during their first conversation.

But David didn’t see her extra pounds, he just saw her potential and asked her if she was willing to go through a “Wonder Woman Makeover” which included liposuction of the chin, arms and thighs as well as a
“Brazilian Butt” lift. She opted for everything he suggested and put her body in his able hands. After he was done, Dr. Matlock asked Veronica out and proposed to her on their very first date. He has been helping her improve her physique ever since, also encouraging her to stick to a healthy diet and strict exercise program.

--> But it wasn’t just Veronica who benefited from Dr. Matlock’s procedures. In order to get the perfect manly body he had always dreamed of, the plastic surgeon has undergone several procedures himself. The 49-year-old says diet and exercising could only take his body to a certain level, so he had liposuction done on his pecs, biceps and triceps, and used a technique called Vaser High Def Liposculpting, which he pioneered, to inject live fat into the biceps, triceps, calves, or pecs and give them a sculpted look.

Today, both he and his 39-year-old wife compete in body-building competitions which keep them motivated to look their best. “Because he keeps himself looking good, it’s added pressure. So I feel like I have to look good, you know,” Veronica told Barcroft Media. The two eat six carefully planned meals a day, consisting of lean chicken, fish, rice and vegetables.

The Matlocks’ daughter, nine-year-old Isabella, doesn’t share their views on fitness and plastic surgery. She feels healthy food doesn’t taste good and says she would never want to go under the knife for cosmetic purposes, “because it’s not really you, like I want to be myself”. Veronica says that although her husband encourages her to get various procedures done, she feels he loves her for who she is, because when she first walked into his office she didn’t look very attractive, but he always tells her it was love at first sight.

Man Who Can’t Make It to Anything on Time Gets Diagnosed with Chronic Lateness Condition

Posted on 04:34 by Unknown
For as long as he can remember, 57-year-old Jim Dunbar has never been able to make it to appointments on time. His friends and family always thought he was making excuses, but after a recent doctor’s appointment, for which he was a half-hour late, Jim was diagnosed with incurable lateness.

Jim Dunbar used to always tell people it wasn’t his fault he couldn’t make it on time for anything, but they never took him seriously. Even as a five-year-old he remembers constantly being late for school, football matches and holidays. As an adult he has left women waiting for him on first dates, lost several jobs, turned up to meals with his
friends hours after the set meeting time and even showed up for funerals long after they had started. Recently, Jim tried to catch a movie at the local cinema, in Forfar, Scotland, and knowing his lateness might get in the way, he gave himself an 11-hour head start to make sure he got there on time.

--> Dunbar knew the movie started at 7 pm, but despite his best efforts, he arrived 20 minutes late. After going through countless similar experiences, he finally decided to talk to a doctor about his problem. He was a half-hour late for his appointment at a Ninewells hospital, but he finally got an answer to the question that had been bugging him for a lifetime – “Why can’t I be on time?”

After conducting a series of tests, medical experts his constant lateness is caused by a brain disorder. They learned that his condition affects the same part of the brain as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), rendering him unable to estimate how long things take. Unfortunately it’s incurable, and no matter how hard Jim tries, he can’t seem to do anything about it.

He has a special clock in his living-room that uses radio frequencies tuned to a national transmitter to make sure it always displays the right time, right down to the seconds, but it hasn’t helped him much. He tried wearing wristwatches, setting his clocks fast and living early to arrive on time, but to no avail. “It is really depressing sometimes. I can’t overstate how much it helped to say it was a condition.,” Jim told The Evening Telegraph. “The reason I want it out in the open is that there has got to be other folk out there with it and they don’t realize that it’s not their fault.”

Even after being diagnosed with chronic lateness, Jim Dunbar says his family still doesn’t believe it’s not his fault he is always late.

Chinese Kidnappers Give Hostage Money, Release Her After Finding Out She's Poor

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown

Talk about a change of heart.

Two Chinese kidnappers, identified only by their last names –- Lu and Xie -- grabbed an 11-year-old girl in hopes of getting a hefty ransom in return for her release, Shanghai Daily reported. However, once the pair learned that the girl’s family was poor, and there was no way that they would be able to come up with the more than $160,000 they were demanding, Lu and Xie decided to set the girl free and
give her about $80, too.

The girl was unharmed and the two were caught and punished. Lu will serve four years for his crime Xie will serve five.

--> While it sure is unusual for criminals to change courses while they’re in the midst of carrying out a scheme, it does happen every once in a while.
Last month, burglars broke into a San Bernardino, Calif., nonprofit that helps victims of sexual violence and made off with six computers with hard drives, a laptop and a bag of valuables, NBC Los Angeles reported.

But, once the thieves realized that they had stolen from the San Bernardino County Sexual Assault Services, they returned the items and left a pretty heartwarming note, too.

“We had no idea what we were takeing [sic]. Here your stuff back. We hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in peoples [sic] live. God bless,” the note read.

Everyone involved, police and the organization’s employees, were stunned and elated.
"We were all pretty shocked," Candy Stallings, the nonprofit’s executive director, told the news outlet. "You've got to be kidding me. I was in disbelief, I got chills, I got very emotional."

Yukon Bar Customer Swallows Human Toe ... On Purpose

Posted on 03:53 by Unknown
An American man is the newest member of the "Sourtoe Cocktail Club" — except, instead of touching the severed human toe to his lips, he downed the digit floating in his whiskey shot.

The Sourtoe Cocktail has been a tradition at the Downtown Hotel bar in Dawson City, Yukon, since 1973, when, as the story goes, a local named Captain Dick found an amputated toe preserved in jar.
-->

Customers are not supposed to ingest the toe. The rules are: "You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow — but the lips have gotta touch the toe."

That first toe lasted until 1980, when a man going for his thirteenth Sourtoe swallowed it by mistake. But the
American customer made no mistake on Saturday, said Terry Lee, the "toe captain" that night. He slugged the shot, chased it with a beer, then slammed five $100 bills on the table — the fine if the toe is "taken into the mouth, bitten, chewed or swallowed."

"I said, 'Where's the toe?' and he said, 'I swallowed it,'" Lee said. The bar has now raised the fine to $2,500 and pulled out the backup toe, but they need more.

Selling anywhere from 30 to 50 Sourtoe Cocktails a night — as many as 124 on one occasion, Lee said — means the one toe will begin to degrade.

Anyone wishing to donate a toe can contact the hotel. Lee says he's already promised to give up both of his.
"If there's an afterlife, I'd be up there in heaven or wherever, looking down, watching people kiss my toes."

VIDEO: Scientist Sends Brain Signal Via The Internet To Control Colleague's Hand

Posted on 03:30 by Unknown

University of Washington scientists Rajesh Rao (on the left) and Andrea Stocco (on the right) claim that they have been able to demonstrate human brain-to-brain communication, a feat that has only been successfully demonstrated between rats and from human to rats.

A University of Washington press release described the experiment as follows:
--> The team had a Skype connection set up so the two labs could coordinate, though neither Rao nor Stocco could see the Skype screens. Rao looked at a computer screen and played a simple video game with his mind. When he was supposed to fire a cannon at a target, he imagined moving his right hand (being careful not to actually move his hand), causing a cursor to hit the "fire" button. Almost instantaneously, Stocco, who wore noise-canceling earbuds and wasn't looking at a computer screen, involuntarily moved his right index finger to push the space bar on the keyboard in front of him, as if firing the cannon. Stocco compared the feeling of his hand moving involuntarily to that of a nervous tic.
Rao and Stocco next plan to conduct an experiment that would transmit more complex information from one brain to the other. If that works, they then will conduct the experiment on a larger pool of subjects.

Their research was funded in part by the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Research Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering at the University of Washington, the U.S. Army Research Office and the National Institutes of Health.

Liberia's University Entrance Exam Failed By All 25,000 Students Who Took It

Posted on 01:05 by Unknown
Students in the UK and US think getting into university here is tough.
But spare a thought for candidates in Liberia - after every single one of them failed this year's university entrance exam.
Almost 25,000 students failed the admissions test for the University of Liberia - one of the African country's two state-run universities - meaning it will have no first year students when the new term begins in September.
A university official told the BBC that students who took the test did not have a basic grasp of English and "lacked enthusiasm", but the country's education minister said she found it hard to
believe that not a single candidate managed to pass.
Etmonia David-Tarpeh said she would be meeting with officials from the university to discuss the dismal failure rate.
She acknowledged that there were weaknesses in the education system in Liberia, which is still recovering from a civil war which ended 10 years ago, but said she had her doubts that no one could have passed.
A spokesman for the university said it would be standing by its decision, and that the government needed to do more to improve student's knowledge of English.

Man Cuddles With Fox, Thinking It's His Girlfriend

Posted on 00:36 by Unknown
This guy really got some tail last night.
London man Leon Smith, 30, was sleeping when he felt someone nuzzling the back of his neck. He reached over to snuggle with who he thought was his girlfriend, only to discover a fox in his bed.
"I just couldn't believe it," Smith said. "It was so calm, just staring at me."
After a stressful few minutes, the fox ran off.
Gawker points out that the couple plans to keep this kind of furry encounter from happening again:

Although his girlfriend Sophie (who was at work at the time) found the whole thing fairly amusing, she said she wasn't particularly interested in her snuggle rival making another impromptu booty call.
Geekosystem posits that Smith should feel lucky, not upset.
... who among us, if given the chance would pass up the chance to cuddle with a fox? You girlfriend will still be there tomorrow, Leon. Get your priorities in order, dude.

Teenager Arrested For The Rape Of a 93-Year-Old Woman

Posted on 00:11 by Unknown
Anderson police say they have detained 17-year-old Iquise Taylor in connection to the rape of a 93-year-old woman.
Joel Sandefur, spokesman for the Anderson Police Department, said Friday that Iquise Taylor, is at the county juvenile center. He has not been arrested or formally charged.
Police said the elderly woman was raped and beaten in her house in the 3600 block of Hamilton Place
in Anderson. The intruder, police said, forced his way through the door while the woman was sleeping. The woman, who lives alone, called a family member after the intruder fled. The incident happened July 16.
Sandefur called the crime “heinous,” adding that the woman had several bruises on her face. Nothing was stolen from the home, he said, indicating the motive was not robbery. He said police were able to connect the boy to the crime “based on evidence that we’ve developed.”
Sandefur declined to share further information until a press conference on Monday.
