A Plantation woman is facing a charge of first-degree murder after stabbing her husband to death during an argument, Plantation Police said. Tyra Lashay Holmes, 26, stabbed and killed her husband, Michael Holmes, 35, Wednesday night during an argument that was possibly about infidelity, police said.
According to a Plantation Police report, the motive was text messages her husband received from a woman. “We just saw him Sunday and he was trying to leave her, but all because of text message in the phone. You killed my brother,” said Amber Jewell, the victim’s sister. Another sister said he was not in a relationship with anybody else.
“He was good to her and his kids and she murdered him for a senseless reason, a senseless
reason, she took the life of my brother for a senseless reason,” said Alexis Jewell. The couple, married for less than two years, lived in a Plantation apartment complex, the Alexan Solero Apartments, at 203 NW 135th Ave. #103.Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley read from the probable cause affidavit in court. “It says you woke him up to confront him. He became angry, jumped out of bed and allegedly put his palm against your forehead, pinned you against the wall,” Hurley said, adding that Tyra Holmes then ran downstairs, where she retrieved a kitchen knife.
She told police she went back upstairs, and said she planned to use the knife to hurt her husband, according to the affidavit. When Tyra Holmes got to the top of the stairs, her husband tried to hug her, but she raised the knife in her right hand next to her ear and then blacked out, the affidavit said.
She told police her husband ran into the knife while she held it next to her ear. A few minutes later, she stepped forward and willingly stabbed him one time, police said. Michael Holmes took two steps backward and said “you stabbed me,” according to police. Tyra Holmes told police she and her husband said they loved each other before he went outside to get fresh air and she called 911.
Michael Holmes was taken to Broward General Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. The stabbing allegedly happened while Tyra Holmes was out on bond for an arrest in April. In that case she faces one count of child neglect, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of false information to a law enforcement officer during an investigation.
She had left her baby boy home alone, according to the victim’s family. They were visibly upset when she walked down the hallway to the shelter hearing for her year-old twins on Friday. Holmes entered that courtroom crying and shaking. She is being held without bond at the Paul Rein Detention Facility, online jail records said.
Her children will live in a foster home while the Department of Children and Families investigates family members on both sides to see if the twins can eventually be placed with a relative. “She’s my oldest child, she’s a good mother,” said the defendant’s mother, Andrea Wallace. “I mean, unfortunately this incident happened and it’s sad for both sides, but the truth will prevail in the end as to what happened.”
