A Richmond, Va., woman has been arrested after she allegedly gave birth to her baby in a bathroom and tossed it in a trash bag, leaving it to die.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Shavaughn Robinson gave birth to a baby girl last Tuesday in the restroom of an office building, where she works as a message therapist. After giving birth to the child, Robinson allegedly threw the girl in a trash bag, covered her with toilet tissue, tied the bag closed and left it in a nearby dumpster. A janitor found the baby that evening.
The newborn did not survive. Robinson was charged with felony concealment of a dead body; additional charges are possible.
A judge from the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court set Robinson’s bond at $10,000. The prosecution preferred that Robinson be held without bond and plans to appeal the decision. Another bond hearing could be held this week in Richmond Circuit Court.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Janae Craddock said Robinson was seen cleaning up blood in the bathroom. A janitor who works at the building said Robinson claimed to be suffering from stomach problems.
“Her only concern was cleaning up her mess,” Craddock said.
WTVR-6 interviewed Robinson’s uncle recently. Going only by “Mr. Robinson,” the uncle told reporters that he saw a television report of a woman being arrested for killing her baby but had no idea it was his niece. He described her as a hard-working woman who held down two jobs while taking care of her 4-year-old son. Mr. Robinson says he had no idea his niece was pregnant.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the baby girl’s death a homicide.
